As we embrace the new year, it is an opportunity to re-frame our thinking and to challenge the hidden scripts we live by.
- Become “overly optimistic” – Mr Money Mustache is a pragmatist, I think I default to the same mindset – anticipating what could go wrong, but I’ve been convinced by MMM himself that it is worth re-framing any future event anticipated to be bad, that it will be awesome. There is very little downside. Check out The Practical Benefits of Outrageous Optimism and Mental Models for MMM’s Outrageous Optimism Argument.
- Realise The Joy That Comes When Less Is Enough – From the Frugalwoods – Frequently having a muffin or high priced latte diminishes its value, have it infrequently and it’s a real treat. Often the infrequency of the something we love, gives us greater joy.
- Take a break from the socially accommodated {insert here} addiction that you have. You know it is not great for you, sure, it feels rewarding at the time, but really it is like buying something on credit, you never pay back less than it cost. Alcohol, Sugar, some Drugs and Cigarettes are a good place to start – I’ve given up alcohol already and I’m takin a break from meat and other animal products in a 90 days Clean Living Challenge.
- Create structure in your life as Discipline equals freedom – I’ve shared before about the paradox that routine and structure give me freedom.
- Recognise that our choices influence the life we have – Easy choices, hard life. Hard choices, easy life. A quote by Jerzy Gregorek that sums up much of the life we lead, Jerzy is a Polish man who went from being an alcoholic to winning four World Weightlifting Championships and is perhaps the epitome of embracing this mindset.
What mindsets are you looking to adopt this year?
